Why Adopt?
-
🖤
Studies show that spending time with dogs can lower cortisol (stress hormone) levels and increase serotonin and dopamine, helping to ease anxiety, depression, and daily stress.
-
🖤
Dog owners are more likely to meet daily physical activity goals. Regular walks and playtime improve cardiovascular health, mobility, and overall fitness.
-
🖤
Dogs are natural icebreakers! Whether it’s chatting with other dog owners at the park or joining pet-friendly events, having a dog often increases social interaction and community engagement.
-
🖤
The unconditional love and loyalty of a dog offers constant emotional support, helping reduce feelings of loneliness and enhancing overall well-being.
-
🖤
Providing a Sense of Purpose: Caring for a dog—feeding, grooming, and walking—establishes a daily routine and structure. This responsibility can give a powerful sense of being needed and useful, boosting morale and self-worth.
-
🖤
Cognitive Stimulation: Engaging with a pet involves memory, problem-solving (like planning walks or remembering feeding times), and verbal interaction, all of which contribute to maintaining cognitive function.
How to Apply to Adopt – Simple Steps
Step 1: Submit the Application
Fill out the short online adoption form. You’ll need to:
List the name of the dog you're interested in
Describe your home, family, and daily routine
Upload required photos (see below)
Step 2: Upload These Photos (Required)
Your photo ID (you may black out everything except your name and address)
A photo of your fenced yard, if applicable
If you live in an apartment or condo, a photo of where you plan to walk the dog
Applications without photos cannot be reviewed. We do not hold applications while waiting for missing photos.
Step 3: Tell Us About You
There’s a question in the application:
“Tell us about your family, your home, and why you’re ready to adopt.”
This is one of the most important parts. Foster families rely on this to decide who they’d like to meet. The more thoughtful and detailed you are, the better your chances.
Step 4: Be Ready
Only apply when you’re ready to adopt within 72 hours. If you're not ready right away, please wait to apply.
2. Helpful Hints & What to Expect
How Applications Are Reviewed
Our team checks that your application is complete and eligible.
Qualified applications are sent to the dog’s foster family, who knows them best.
Foster families select a few top applicants to interview, based on the detail and care shown in your answers and photos.
Helpful Tip: Incomplete or vague applications are rarely selected.
Phone Interview
If you’re selected, you’ll be contacted for a brief phone call.
We'll talk about your daily life, experience with dogs, and how you plan to care for your new family member.
Meet & Greet
If the interview goes well, you’ll meet the dog in a public place (usually a park) within a few days. Meetings are based on the foster family’s availability and location, so please be flexible and kind. Many are senior volunteers.
Adoption & Payment
If it’s a match:
You’ll complete adoption paperwork
Payment is due at pickup:
Cash, or
Venmo (please make sure your account works beforehand)
A Final Note
Our rescue is 100% volunteer-run, and many of our fosters are retirees or seniors who donate their time and love.
Please treat them with respect and kindness throughout the process.
Foster families have the final say in choosing the best match for each dog.
Can’t Commit Yet? Fostering Is a Beautiful First Step.
Give a dog the love and safety they need while they wait for their forever home—you might just find it’s the beginning of something special.
FAQs
-
You should be ready to adopt within 72 hours of submitting your application. This means being prepared to travel to the Seattle/Western Washington area for a meet and greet with the dog.
-
At this time, we only accept foster applications from individuals with prior dog ownership experience. Fostering can come with unexpected challenges, so we rely on fosters who are confident and experienced in dog care.
-
No—we’re currently only able to consider local applications from residents of Western Washington or the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. This ensures we can coordinate meet-and-greets and support our dogs and families properly. We wouldn’t place a dog if we couldn’t meet the new adoptive family. One of Dr’s K.’s favorite stories to tell when sticking to her long held policy of in person meetings, was that several times families from other countries fell in love with a dog. The family she often referenced flew to Vancouver, from Perth, Australia to adopt a 8 year old dachshund named “Mr T.”
